I saw Park/Jordan/Futterman/Fielder at the Guelph jazz Festival, which is sort of Canada's Vision fest (for continuity Parker and/or Drake, I think have played them all, or at least the decade I've been going). I think it was kind of a one-off (billed as the 'Creative Collective'), but given both the empathy of the performers and the impact of the date, Sunday's show was a top 5 lifetime show for me. It blew Parker and Paul Plimley (two days before) out of the water, and that was overwhelming enough. Anywho, I highly recommend a trip to Guelph for anyone close who loves the music. Certainly the greatest bang for buck one can get outside of NYC.

I stand jealous of your Sun Ra shows. Never made it to the old Knitting factory, or even Tonic. I've made the pilgrimage to the Stone, but seeing the man from Saturn in that window must have been earth-shattering.

Just lucky enough to live close to NYC at a time when things were happening matchstickstatue.I have seen all of the great free jazz artists who have performed since 81' on,and I have to say Sun Ra was as powerful a presence as I have seen on a stage .When he would saunter out,he seemed to almost glide to his keyboard set up.The cat was serious about his music, and created a vibe I have never felt from other musicians,if you locked in with him during a song you felt like he knew it,and eventually he would look you dead in the eye.It is a shame everyone did not get to feel the power of Sun Ra in person.
On the other hand,it's a great thing our northern neighbors have a world class jazz festival every year.Mr. Parker can have that effect on folks, just leave you shaking your head after a brilliant performance.
